Secretary/Treasurer - Position Description

ABCPLD is an executive association of the library directors who lead public libraries across British Columbia. ABCPLD also provides organized representation to both provincial and federal governments on behalf of library administration, representing the shared interests of public libraries’ leaders.   

The Secretary/Treasurer is responsible for oversight of the ABCPLD budget and financial statements, and for ensuring the Executive Director issues notices of meetings, keeps minutes of all minutes, and properly maintains the register of members. Along with the entire Board, the Secretary/Treasurer is responsible for the strategic and fiduciary oversight of ABCPLD and for guiding the organization into the next phase of development. Per the ABCPLD Bylaws, the Secretary/Treasurer can serve two consecutive two year terms in the role. 

The Secretary/Treasurer is expected to attend ABCPLD board meetings and as many events and training that ABCPLD puts on as possible. Meetings are held both virtually and a few times a year in person in the Lower Mainland and Victoria.

It is realistic to expect that the Secretary/Treasurer position takes, on average, 5 hours each month. This can increase if travel is required and depending on where the Secretary/Treasurer lives. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend Board meetings

  • Attend ABCPLD trainings and events

  • Assist in strategic planning and oversight 

  • Fiduciary oversight of ABCPLD

  • Meet with Executive Director and Bookkeeper/Administrative Assistant

  • Support fellow board members and the Executive Director

The Secretary/Treasurer Demonstrates:

  • Diplomacy and ability to get along with different personalities 

  • Welcoming, approachable, warm presence for other members

  • Proven diplomacy and consensus building skills

  • Strong collaborative leadership skills

  • Political but non-partisan 

  • Knowledge of the BC library environment and legislation

  • Organized, reliable and responsible

  • Experience with budgeting, understanding financial statements and basic accounting practices
